Holo, reverse holo, 1st edition — Pokémon card variants and their prices

3 min · Oct 30, 2026 · Cardometer

Why the same card has several prices and which variant is worth the most.

Every card page shows several prices. That is not a bug: Cardmarket prices each print variant separately because collectors pay differently for them.

Normal and holo

Commons and uncommons are usually printed without foil (normal). Rares come with a shiny artwork (holo). Many cards exist in only one of these.

Reverse holo

The foil covers the whole card except the artwork. In Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolution boosters there is a reverse holo in every pack, so it usually costs little more than the normal version — except for popular Pokémon and older sets.

1st edition and shadowless

The oldest sets (Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, Team Rocket, Gym, Neo) had a first print run marked with an “Edition 1” stamp, often worth several times the later print. “Shadowless” is an early Base Set print without the shadow next to the artwork frame.

Which price is the headline?

Headline prices, rankings and levels use base variants: normal, holo and reverse — whichever is priced highest. Rare promo stamps therefore do not inflate a regular card. Full rules are in our methodology.
