1. Age and print run

The earliest sets (Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, Neo and e-Card, 1999–2003) were printed when cards were treated as toys, and most copies were played to death. Copies in good condition are rare today. The e-Card sets (Expedition, Aquapolis, Skyridge) also had small print runs — hence the high prices of their holos.

2. Rarity and version

  • 1st Edition — the first print run of vintage sets, marked with a stamp below the artwork; usually several times the Unlimited price.
  • Holo and reverse holo — foil on the artwork or on everything except the artwork.
  • Special Illustration Rare, Hyper Rare, Gold — modern full-art and gold rarities; the most expensive cards of new sets.

3. The Pokémon’s popularity

Charizard, Pikachu, Umbreon, Rayquaza, Gengar and Mew have a loyal collector base. A rare illustration of a fan favourite can cost many times more than the same rarity of a lesser-known Pokémon.

4. Condition and grading

Ranking prices are for ungraded (“raw”) cards in good condition. A PSA or CGC 10 can sell for several times more; a scratched copy for much less. See our guide to card grading.

5. Demand right now

Prices react to films, games, anniversaries, influencer hype and reprints — so look at the price history, not just today’s price. Cards rising fastest over the last 30 days:

Frequently asked questions

What is the most expensive Pokémon card ever sold?

Record sales involve unique promos and trophy cards such as Pikachu Illustrator, a PSA 10 copy of which sold for over 5 million US dollars in 2022. Such cards rarely appear on Cardmarket, so our ranking shows cards that actually trade.

Are old Pokémon cards from the 90s worth a lot?

Only some. Common Base Set cards in average condition sell for a few euros. Value is concentrated in holos, 1st Edition copies and cards in excellent condition.

Where do the prices come from?

From Cardmarket, Europe’s largest card marketplace — we show the daily price trend.

Can new cards be more expensive than old ones?

Yes. The rarest illustrations of new sets often sell for hundreds of euros right after release, and some later overtake vintage holos.
